Mad Bull disease: European Union. (European Commission grants subsidies to Bull and other European companies)

WITH token opposition from its resident liberal, Sir Leon Brittan, the European Commission has approved a French government subsidy of FFr11.1 billion ($2.1 billion) to an ailing computer-maker, Bull. The decision, taken on October 12th, hands ammunition to critics who say the European Union has gone soft on subsidies. For Bull is only the latest in a series of firms to get EU-approved handouts (others include Portugal's and Greece's state airlines), with more queuing up. The commission, say its critics, cannot stand up to governments, especially now that commissioners are scrambling to be confirmed in office and do not want to offend potential supporters. What can the commission say usefully in reply to its critics?
