England defeated Scotland 24-12 in rugby, and the team has proven to be best in Europe, but its chance of winning the World Cup in 1995 is doubtful. The team's new coach, Jack Rowell, will probably be an asset, however. Rowell is planning to emphasize try-scoring.

THE fete flopped. The climax of the rugby union season in the northern hemisphere, the final day of the annual Five Nations' Championship on March 18th, produced 15 penalty goals and only one try. That awkward 15-to-one ratio is the worst ever seen--an absolute record for one afternoon in a tournament launched way back in 1910.
