IT WAS described as a three-legged race; but it looked more like a game of leapfrog. Nobuyuki Idei, the number 15 in Sony's directorial hierarchy, has been plucked from obscurity to become heir-apparent to the Japanese electronics giant's current leader, Norio Ohga. Mr Idei is taking over as president, while Mr Ohga acquires the honorific post of chairman. Mr Ohga, nevertheless, retains the description "chief executive officer"; Mr Idei must content himself with becoming "chief operating officer". It was Mr Ohga who thought of this arrangement as being like a team entered into a three-legged race. What it seems to mean in practice is that Mr Ohga is unwilling to let go.
