The Senate voted 69-29 to lift the embargo on arms shipments to the beleaguered Bosnian government on July 26, 1995, over the objections of the Clinton administration. However, there appears to be little support in the Senate for either direct arms aid or US troop commitments to Bosnia.
TO LISTEN to the rhetoric of some senators, their angry vote on lifting the Bosnian arms embargo marks a turning-point in the tragedy of ex-Yugoslavia: the victims of ethnic cleansing can at last aspire to the means of defending themselves against Serb aggression. To listen to the dire warnings of the Clinton administration, both before and after the vote, it could mark the beginning of Armageddon. Who is to be believed? Quite possibly, neither.
