Many Internet users and service providers fear that Andreessen's Netscape Communications will dominate the Net, in direct comparison with Microsoft's Bill Gates. Although its Navigator has won 75% of the Web-browser market, Netscape will not have the advantage of a proprietary industry standard.

ENGLISH cricket fans are forever greeting another Ian Botham; American Democrame worth winning. Bright young people with good ideas can make a fortune in software. Microsoft has created several thousand millionaires out of its employees and investors. Yet so far the next Mr Gates has irritatingly often been Mr Gates: every time a new software market appears, he grabs a healthy slice of it for himself.

That makes it telling that the latest pretender to the crown has popped...
