Novell is struggling to revive the success of WordPerfect, the once dominant word processing program that is now overshadowed by Microsoft Word. Novell's trials with WordPerfect have allowed Microsoft to make gains in the networking software market.

THERE was a time, not long ago, when a personal computer and WordPerfect were virtually synonymous. If you used a word processor (and who didn't?) you probably saw visions of "F7" keys in your sleep, along with the rest of WordPerfect's perversely arbitrary key commands. Microsoft may have owned the operating system (whatever that was), but for most users WordPerfect owned the desktop. No more: today, Microsoft's Word and its other software programs dominate this market. And WordPerfect has become an ailing orphan....
