Merger talks between Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, which would have created the world's largest commercial-airline and defence group, broke down because neither a price for McDonnell Douglas nor a role for its top executives could be agreed on. With Boeing's strength in civil aviation and McDonnell Douglas's in defence, a takeover still seems a possibility.

USAir has got a new boss in the form of Stephen Wolf, whose tough stand against unions ensured the loss of his job as head of United Airlines after employees took control. He will again take on the unions at UsAir, where high labour costs have led to years of poor results.

Profits at America's Big Three car makers will be about 40% down in the fourth quarter, analysts say, to a combined $2.6 billion...
