HOW good a manager is Gilbert Amelio, Apple Computer's new chairman and chief executive? Very good indeed, says someone who knows him well: "More impressive even than his memory, his patience, and his skill in gaining support, may be [his] analytical ability." The source is impeccable--it is Mr Amelio's own (co-written) book, "Profit from Experience" (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1996), his tale of how he turned around National Semiconductor, a faltering American chip maker.
On the strength of that story, Apple's board no doubt thought that Mr Amelio was just the man to replace Michael Spindler, whom many blame for Apple's current woes. But Mr Amelio's time at National Semiconductor was not quite as successful as his book claims.
