Alan Greenspan has been selected for a third term as head of the Federal Reserve. In that position, he wields considerable power over the US and world economies. He must deal with slowing economic growth and continue to fight against the return of inflation.

A GAGGLE of Republicans dreams of winning one presidential term. Bill Clinton prays for a second one. But Alan Greenspan has just been given a third four- year term as chairman of the Federal Reserve, a job which arguably vests him with more influence over the world economy.
