Verisign has already developed two types of digital signatures, which can identify Internet users to prevent fraud. The California-based company is working with Visa to develop similar signatures for credit card users.

THE great thing about the Internet", runs a favourite geek joke, "is that no one knows that you're really a dog." The anonymity that the Internet grants users may be a splendid thing for some people, but it is now threatening the growth of commerce on the medium. The trouble is that if no one knows that you are a dog, they certainly cannot be sure that you are not. And if that is the case, they might think twice before giving you their money.
