Two fast-growing American telecoms companies will merge to create a business-communications giant that could threaten rivals in both America and Europe. In the third big telecoms merger this year, WorldCom agreed to purchase MFS for $14.4 billion to form a company that will be able to offer local, long-distance and Internet access rolled into one.

SKW Trostberg, the specialty chemicals unit of Germany's Viag, will pay SFr1.3 billion ($1.1 billion) for Master Building Technologies, a unit of Swiss-based Sandoz, a union that would create by far the biggest building-chemicals business in the world.
