PHNOM MALAI
UNTIL the leaders of the Khmers Rouges fell out in August, Phnom Malai was a base used by the guerrillas in their fight against the Cambodian government in Phnom Penh. It was under the command of Ieng Sary, known chiefly as one of the most visible figures in a regime that caused the deaths of perhaps 2m Cambodians. Now he has opened Phnom Malai to government officials and reporters to denounce his former boss, Pol Pot, and to argue that he is the victim of a misunderstanding.
