The French government suspended the sale of Thomson after an independent commission said it could not approve an offer from the Lagardere Groupe because of its plans to sell one part of the conglomerate, Thomson Multimedia, to Daewoo Electronics. With thousands of workers at Thomson Multimedia in revolt at the prospect of a South Korean owner, and other labour disputes flaring, the French government gave in.
Another South Korean firm, Samsung Electronics, had better luck. In March the world's biggest supplier of personal-computer screens will supply the first of 5m monitors to IBM, the American computer giant, in a three-year deal worth $2 billion.
