TOGETHER, Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe represent the closest thing the young Internet publishing industry has to a Citizen Kane. Five years ago they launched Wired, which has evolved from the hip bible of the Internet generation to an advertisement-packed lifestyle magazine for the pretentious technophile. On-line, their HotWired network proffers everything from politics to cocktail recipes. Off-line, they run a book publisher and are dabbling in television. The couple even named their first son, born on January 28th, Orson. No wonder that the fortunes of their Wired Ventures are so keenly watched: as it goes, so may go the entire "new media" industry.
