Several members of the European Union are doubtful about the authority and impartiality of the European Court of Justice. The court is accused of promoting federalism at the cost of national sovereignity. The court is also overloaded and has little power to penalize offenders.

ATTACKS on the Court of Justice long predate the birth of Euroscepticism. In the 1960s, one French politician accused it of "morbid megalomania".
