Brussels v Boeing: the European Union's competition commissioner still wants to veto Boeing's merger with McDonnell Douglas.

The European Union opposes the merger of aerospace giants McDonnell Douglas and Boeing because of the potential loss of business to Airbus Industrie, which is based in Europe. Boeing already has a large market share of the industry in Europe and may end up with 80% of the market with a merger.

NEITHER side wants it, but Europe and America are squaring up for an angry trade dispute over civil aircraft. Barring a last-minute cave-in by Boeing, the European Union will next week block the merger between the world leader in civil aircraft and the number three contender, McDonnell Douglas.
