AS EVEN the least clothes-minded of readers will have noticed, the fashion world has for years practised a kind of self-reflexive satire that puts it safely beyond the reach of parody. How, say, do you out-Lagerfeld Karl Lagerfeld with his powdered ponytail, black shades and ever-fluttering fan? A sensible person would not try.
Yet a surprising number of authors and directors who ought to know better are bringing out books or films touching the world of fashion that aim to mock the unmockable.
