Privatising state education has had mixed results

FROM the howls of protest, one would think the Goths were at the gate. The education establishment greeted with horror the news that Jarvis, a firm best known for a less-than-stellar perfomance in railway maintenance, had won a three-year pound sterling1.9m contract to advise the 700 worst secondary schools in England. John Dunford, of the Secondary Heads' Association, said he was "shocked"; David Hart, from another headteachers' union, said it was "extraordinary" and "inappropriate".
