The FCC's HDTV advisory committee has pushed back testing on the four proposed systems to May 24. The tests had been scheduled to begin the first week in May. In mid-April, however, the committee learned that test materials were not ready for the two systems that use a method called "progressive scan" to create a picture on the screen.

A progressive scan system was scheduled to be tested first. The committee tried to stay on scheduled, using a machine to quickly convert testing materials to the progressive scan format. Advisory Committee Chairman Richard Wiley said the transconverter did not work, so testing had to be pushed back three weeks.
