House Telecommunications Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has introduced trade legislation aimed at opening telecommunications markets in Europe to U.S. companies. (Brief Article)

Broadcasting & Cable, November, 1993

House Telecommunications Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has introduced trade legislation aimed at opening telecommunications markets in Europe to U.S. companies. Under the measure, the FCC could impose regulatory sanctions against foreign companies from countries that bar U.S. exports.

The bill also deals with financial markets. "It's simply unacceptable that Fidelity [the largest mutual fund company in the U.S.] can't sell mutual funds in Japan or Korea, and AT&T had to wait until this year to sell its first-ever telecommunications switch in Japan," Markey says.
