On-line computer services hope to switch from telco delivery to cable Prodigy and America Online, two of the country foremost on-line computer services, see the future in cable television. Both are aggressively pursuing cable programers to provide on-line programing and are encouraging cable operators to upgrade their systems to deliver the services.
Cable systems could run the on-line services up to 1,000 faster than telephone networks do today. But first cable systems must be equipped for two-way communications. And the price of high-speed cable modems must drop.
