Ed Markey, NBC's vice president, sports information, said last week that Bob Costas's apology for his remarks about the Chinese government had nothing to do with an agreement announced last week between NBC parent GE and state-run China Telecom to construct a network in China to provide electronic trading for government organizations, banks and other traders.
NBC apologized to Chinese groups who were offended that the network's Olympics anchor (now on vacation) cited China's poor human rights record and pointed out that some of its athletes had been caught in previous years using performance-enhancing drugs.
