Philips Consumer Electronics plans to introduce a plug-and-play Internet-access unit in October. The Philips Magnavox WebTV unit, to be released at a suggested retail price of $329, will afford ready Internet access through any standard TV set. The set-top boxes will enable access speeds to Internet content of 33.6 kbps using a 112 mhz 64-bit Orion MIPS RISC microprocessor.

A 44.1 khz 16-bit stereo audio output will deliver CD-quality sound. Purchasing transactions will be facilitated with an ISO smart card slot, enabling use of credit cards, cash cards and smart cards.
