Broad coalition plans defense against computer, filmmaker attack

Broadcasters thought they had reached the end of their eight-year digital TV standard-setting odyssey last December. Instead, they now find themselves facing still more battles over the broadcast technology with computer industry giant Bill Gates and others.

Later this month, industry leaders as well as representatives from TV set makers, consumer groups and labor unions will gather at National Association of Broadcasters headquarters in Washington to brainstorm strategies for jump-starting their beleaguered standard at the FCC.
