Apple Computer and Microsoft Corp. moved into a cooperative mode last week, as Apple announced plans to include Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Macintosh with its computers.

The news from Apple's Macworld conference represents a coup for Microsoft, in gaining more distribution for Explorer in its continuing browser battle with Netscape's Navigator. But it also benefits Apple, which will now incorporate Microsoft's ActiveX Controls to let Mac users view multimedia content created through the ActiveX authoring technology and support for Java applets (small Apple applications).

Apple also plans to upgrade the OLiVR streaming technology with its QuickTime VR 2.0 multimedia authoring tool. That will enable Apple customers to produce photorealistic...
