It will split into three companies: NextLevel Systems, CommScope and General Semiconductor Cable equipment manufacturer General Instrument is restructuring itself into three separate, publicly traded companies that will focus on three core areas in a rapidly growing telecommunications industry.

The company will align its core businesses of settop boxes, satellite equipment and cable modems into NextLevel Systems, which has projected 1996 revenues of roughly $1.7 billion. That company will combine GI's Communications divisions, in Hatboro, Pa., and San Diego, and its Rohnert Park, Calif.-based NextLevel Communications subsidiary, and will be based in Chicago.
