It's paying $425 million to browse the 'Net on television sets In a move to strengthen its position at the forefront of the convergence of the computer and broadcast industries, Microsoft has agreed to pay $425 million to acquire Web-TV Networks Inc., the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company that markets a settop box for browsing the internet via television sets.

The announcement of the acquisition was made by Craig Mundie, the Microsoft vice president who oversees all of the company's convergence efforts. Mundie also said that Microsoft will integrate its broadcast architecture for Windows (which includes Netshow), software for delivering audio and video signals via the Internet, into the Memphis release of Windows as well as Windows NT 5.0.
