Broadcasting & Cable, May, 1997

Cable television ventures contributed to higher revenue at Baby Bell Ameritech, but they also added to operating costs, the company says. Ameritech reported $3.859 billion in revenue for first quarter 1997, compared with $3.567 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income was $536 million, compared with $478 million in the prior-year period.

Operating expenses increase by $202 million, or 7.4%, from the previous year because of growth businesses, such as cellular and security monitoring services, and increases in employe-related expenses and expenses for emerging businesses. Earnings per share grew to 97 cents, versus 86 cents in the first quarter last year. Net cash from operating activities grew to $1.314 billion from $781 million.
