America Online filed suit against three junk e-mailers last week in the second major legal action it has taken against so-called spammers. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, asks for an injunction to force the three firms to stop their scattershot sending of junk e-mail messages to AOL members.

The three companies are IMS of Knoxville, Tenn., TSF Marketing and TSF Industries of Riverside, Calif., and Gulf Coast Marketing of Baton Rouge. IMS markets a form of financial credit to potential online takers. The two other companies sell online spamming services.
