First issue hits newsstands with record ad pages

ESPN last week launched ESPN: The Magazine, a sports news and feature magazine aimed at attracting the same young sports fans that have made ESPN's SportsCenter a success.

The 184-page premiere issue hit newsstands March 11 with a cover bearing photos of young athletes Kobe Bryant, Kordell Stewart, Alex Rodriguez and Eric Lindros and the word "next." The magazine's vice president and editor-in-chief, John Papanek, says the cover illustrates the editorial tone of the biweekly book, which "is about looking ahead and speaking to a new generation of sports fans."
