Grass Valley introduced the K2 Media Server and client system last week, a next-generation storage system that moves the company's server line squarely into the information-technology (IT) age.

TV stations and networks are increasingly moving to IT as they convert audio and video from videotapes to digital files. They're finding that IT-based products are cheaper because development costs are spread across the entire user base of computers and related gear. Broadcast-specific gear, whose R&D costs are recouped from a much smaller market, is more expensive.
