Chicago--With Paramount and PolyGram jumping on the compact disc-interactive (CD-I) bandwagon, Philips Interactive Media of America (PIMA) believes that it finally has the ammunition to ignite consumer interest in its CD-I player. "Movies close the circle," said Emiel Petrone, PIMA senior VP of marketing and sales.

"We're positioning this as a mass-market product. People are very drawn by two types of activities--music and movies--in an entertainment playback system." At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, PIMA announced it had reached agreements with Paramount Pictures/Paramount Home Video and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (80% owned by PIMA parent, Philips Electronics N.V.) to release movies on 5-inch compact discs.
