Is The Lion King a copycat? Thanks to home video, consumers can judge for themselves, and the controversy can mean a marketing opportunity that could make Leo the Lion a roaring success. In July, New Jersey-based Palm Beach Entertainment released video episodes of Leo the Lion, the Japanese-made 1960s TV series that follows the adventures of a white lion known in this country as Kimba.

Japanese-animation buffs are claiming that Leo/Kimba is the inspiration for the character Simba in Disney's The Lion King. The controversy goes back to legendary Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka, who created The Jungle Emperor, a serialized newspaper strip that chronicled the life and death of Leo and was later published in book form, which has never been out of print ...
