Sony Computer Entertainment last week cut the price of its PlayStation machine by 25%, to $149, making it the lowest-priced "next-generation" platform. Sony also reduced the suggested retail price of its software by $10, to $49.99. Although the price of any game system tends to drop as its installed base grows, the timing of Sony's decision perplexes some retailers.

"The time to increase the installed base is Christmas time, not now," said Neil Levin, owner of The Game Experience, Melville, N.Y. "I don't think they're going to sell a lot more units than they would at the old price." Also, Sony executives acknowledge a shortage of ma-chines.
