Two industry researchers believe console videogame systems could reach the highest level of household penetration ever by the end of this holiday selling season. With the Christmas season expected to be a notably strong one for videogames, Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group predicts that 1997 sales of hardware and software will account for $5.2 billion to $5.3 billion in retail revenues, up about 40% from $3.7 billion in 1996.

For the first three quarters of 1997, total retail sales of videogames were up 60% from last year, NPD said.
