Retailer concern over a perceived softening in the documentary category, coupled with DVD's increasing encroachment on VHS real estate, might be expected to temper the enthusiasm of suppliers marketing documentaries. But those polled by VB maintain that, as in other special-interest categories, recognizable brand names continue to demonstrate solid appeal.

"It's true; some of our customers says sales in the category are soft," acknowledges David Walmsley, director of A&E Home Video, "but our growth has been steady."
