DINO-MIGHT Video retailers have long been told that the impact of video-on-demand on their business will be like that comet that hit the earth 65 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs--once it hits, that's it; adios Videosaurus. What sometimes gets forgotten is that the dinosaur comet wiped out more than 75% of all species on earth, not just the dinosaurs.

If consumers could really order any movie they wanted at any time with a flick of their remote control, why do they need HBO? Or Showtime? How valuable would movies still be on network TV or in syndication? Global cataclysms take little note of where you are (or were) on the food chain. Before that comet hits, however, pay-TV operators are scrambling to improve their odds of survival...
