Purists are crying "Foul!" over this week's release of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut on DVD (color, R, 159 min. plus supplements, Dolby 5.1 Surround, fullscreen, 38 chapters, $24.98). Most have been screaming since last summer when digital images were inserted over 65 seconds of the film's notorious masked orgy sequence to obtain an R rating from the MPAA.
Warner states that what it has released is the director's cut, since Kubrick was to deliver an R film to the studio--indeed, it is the same film that was presented theatrically in the U.S. (The digital imaging was reportedly overseen by Jan Harlan, Kubrick's executive producer of the past 20 years).
