Sega of America is slashing the price of its Dreamcast console in conjunction with the launch of its SegaNet online gaming service. The price cut and online gaming are components of Sega's entrenchment strategy before the launches of competing systems PlayStation 2 from Sony and Nintendo's GameCube.

Sega has reduced the price of its advanced system to $149 a week before the Sept. 7 marketing blitz for SegaNet, the first high-speed online console gaming network and Internet service provider. Sega.com has formed a strategic alliance with Genuity, a division of GTE Corp., to provide eight servers nationwide and dial-up access from anywhere in the U.S. SegaNet will be able to handle 1.2 million users and will expand accordingly.
