LAS VEGAS--In his keynote address on Jan. 7, Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos gave attendees a glimpse of how the Web site listens, invents and personalizes its service to achieve its mission statement of becoming "Earth's most customer-centric company. Through what Bezos calls "collaborative filtering," Amazon can greet customers by name and recommend new items of interest based on past purchases.

In addition, the company tracks consumer searches on the site to develop new features. "When we know common searches, we can build specific stores" for popular actors such as John Wayne or categories such as yoga, Bezos said.
