Sony Computer Entertainment America has bolstered its first-parry PlayStation 2 muscle by acquiring Naughty Dog Studios, best known for the Crash Bandicoot franchise on PlayStation, and Red Zone Interactive, the developer behind 989 Sports' NFL GameDay franchise on PlayStation and PS2.
Naughty Dog, with a staff of 30, becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of SCEA and will operate under the Naughty Dog brand name. According to sources, the company, based in Santa Monica, Calif., is working on a 3D action/adventure game starring a teenage protagonist for PS2. Naughty Dog no longer has ties to the Crash franchise; Universal Interactive has the Crash rights and is bringing the franchise to PS2, Xbox and GameCube.
