* Competition from online sales has taken its toll on mail-order firm Columbia House. With sales sagging at its music and video clubs, the company is shuttering two distribution facilities and has pink-slipped about 500 employees. "Sales are off in both music and video, but music is down more than video," a spokesman said.
Columbia House's distribution facility in Bloomington, Ind., will be closed in about two months, the company said, affecting about 190 employees. A second facility, in Colorado Springs, Colo., will be closed by the end of the year, affecting 500. An additional 43 people in the company's New York headquarters were laid off.
