LOS ANGELES--Microsoft and Sony made major announcements regarding their online strategies at E3, setting up a next-generation Internet showdown for the holidays. According to Doug Lowenstein, president of the Interactive Digital Software Association, online gaming revenue could total $1.1 billion by 2003.

"Everyone is saying that online gaming is the next frontier," said John Taylor, a games analyst and managing director at Arcadia Investments. "We're all talking about it and wondering what exactly it is."
