Universal Music and Video Distribution and Playboy Entertainment have ended their nine-year distribution agreement, leaving Playboy scrambling for a distributor. Some retailers last week received notification that they have only a few weeks to return Playboy VHS and DVD titles to UMVD for credit.

Barry Leshtz, Playboy's senior VP and general manager of worldwide video, confirmed the break and conceded that Universal's abrupt call for Playboy product returns was "not our choosing." "We do not want to leave retailers in the lurch," he said. Leshtz said Playboy is "actively talking to a number of distributors" and expects to have a new one lined up when the UMVD deal expires in a few weeks.
