The video distribution rights to two large animation catalogs shifted hands last week. DIC Entertainment agreed to buy Golden Books Family Entertainment, then quickly announced it had licensed the bulk of its extensive existing catalog of TV animation, including Inspector Gadget, Madeline and Sonic the Hedgehog, to Lions Gate.
The DIC deal is Lions Gate's most significant acquisition of children's product and strengthens the supplier's sell-through catalog considerably. Don Gold, executive VP of worldwide home entertainment for DIC, declined to comment on the distribution future of the Golden Books video line, which includes Christmas classics Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman as well as evergreen properties Lassie and...
