Video retailers need to watch the struggle for power and control at AT&T's cable division. Hanging in the balance is a marketing effort behind switching consumers from 56K modems to the high-speed Internet, something that will help decide the future of entertainment marketing on the Web.

High-speed lnternet,or broadband, still lags behind with 10% of all at-home Internet users. AT&T'S broadband unit has managed to attract 1.3 million customers at home, a number that is pathetically low. Three million AT&T customers have digital cable, and only a third of them has taken the next step to the Internet. Now rival cable system Comcast is bidding for AT&T Broadband. I've seen how Comcast markets broadband, and I hope it wins.
