Category killer Wal-Mart is making an aggressive play for the exploding DVD market without releasing its iron grip on the older VHS format. According to studio sources, the mighty mass merchant is about to expand its DVD footprint again next month, reducing VHS space somewhat to make room but growing the category overall.

Unlike rival sell-through powerhouse Best Buy, Wal-Mart doesn't appear ready to sacrifice VHS for DVD; after the expansion, DVD will reportedly account for 60% f Wal-Mart's video inventory.
