Valley Media has trimmed hundreds from its payroll, drastically scaling back its Louisville, Ky., distribution center to reduce overhead as merger talks with competitor Alliance Entertainment drag on.

Valley is now almost out of the video business, with Alliance supplying new releases for Toys R US, CVS and a few other key accounts Valley had retained until recently. Other major sell-through accounts defected to rivals when Valley began to have problems filling its orders this month. Pathmark and Rite-Aid now get product from Ingram Entertainment, for instance (VB, 10-15). Valley sold its video rental business to VPD in April.
