Still enjoying the rush from PlayStation 2 in 2000, videogame retailers and enthusiasts spent most of 2001 anticipating the release of Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube. Would supply keep up with demand? Given the shape of the economy, would there even be demand? As it turns out, sales have been brisk since each platform launched in late November.

Microsoft is estimated to have shipped 1.5 million units in North America of its first-ever console, and Nintendo shipped roughly 1.3 million GameCube machines. Retailers contacted by VB, meanwhile, said there were enough units of both to go around. With a year to ramp up production, however, P32 was still the hottest box, selling more units than both Xbox and Game-Cube during their respective launch...
