Marketed as a high end professional product since its introduction several years ago, the DVD recorder is now being positioned aggressively by some manufacturers and retailers as an affordable home electronics device. Prices on set-top DVD recorders, which can record content such as TV shows to DVD-Video discs and play them back, are dropping fast.

Last week, Good Guys announced that it would be the first bricks-and-mortar retailer to offer the new Philips Electronics DVDR985 and that it would price the machine below $1,000 ($999 officially). Good Guys has committed an end cap in all 75 of its stores to the DVDR985 and is featuring it prominently in print advertising.
